Here are the Top 10 Songs of All Time. Preference is given to lyric depth, memorable melody, re-recording by other singers and sustained length of cultural significance in order to become a classic in the American mainstream mind.
1. Knockin' on Heaven's Door
2. Yesterday
3. Wedding Song
4. Gimme Shelter
5. Sing (written by Joe Raposo)
6. Amazing Grace
7. Somewhere Over the Rainbow
8. Danny Boy
9. God Bless America
10. Superstition

That's an interesting and varied list there, but it's good! "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is one of my all-time faves. So many people have done such wonderful renditions, but I think my favorite version is the one sung by Jane Monheit (from her Come Dream With Me album, not Taking a Chance on Love.
Oh how I hate the Wedding Song :P
Hi Carla! -- It's so funny I have WordPress running on Eastern Time on the server so when I see you post I am seeing your time and not my local time. It's wacky! I tried to make this songs list cross all kinds of music and go to the core of the idea of all songs with the most popular success. I will check out the Jane Monheit version!
Hiya Robin! -- Yes, "The Wedding Song" has become a tired stereotype -- BUT BOY IS IT POPULAR! Is it a good song that makes it popular or is because everyone loves a sappy melody that makes it popular and overused?
I'm not sure, good question. I know though everytime someone uses it I can't help but roll my eyes. C'mon people...get original. I'm thinking of Walking After You by the Foo Fighters but then that is kind of about stalking :D
That's an interesting song choice, there, Robin! Heh! There are a lot of versions of "The Wedding Song" out there by a wide variety of artists and that's an indicator that the melody is considered timeless and that's a good thing, I suppose, because it helps create good wishes and goodwill. The flip side is that the song risks become imitated and mocked and inducing eye-rolling in those who care about originality.
If you're looking for a good song, I used "God Bless Our Love," the John Lennon song, at our wedding. :)
It turned out quite lovely.
There's your next top ten David — Top Ten Wedding Songs!
Thanks...who knows what direction I will go. I also like the song "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" from the movie Closer although that might be a little too dark. Eh I got time :) Your list definitely makes you think.
Carla -- I like the "Top 10 Wedding Songs" idea. Hmm... I'll have to whip up something on that in the future.
Robin -- I love the song Joe Raposo wrote called "You Will Be My Music" and the melody is so beautiful and haunting. Sinatra debuted that song. It is touching and it sure does apply to you -- maybe not for a wedding -- but certainly for your romance!
I will check that song out for sure.
Hm, interesting choice of top ten. I forgot how the 'Wedding Song' is like. Does it start with, "You by my side, that's how I see us. I close my eyes..."?
Hi A.W.!
Here's the info you requested -- "The Wedding Song (There Is Love)" by Paul Stookey
He is now to be among you, at the calling of your heart
Rest assured this troubador is acting on his part
The union of your spirits here, has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love, there is love
Well a man shall leave his mother, and a woman leave her home
They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one
As it was in the beginning, is now until the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again
There is love, there is love
Well then what's to be the meaning of becoming man and wife
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life
Well if loving is the answer, then who's the giving for
Do you believe in something that you've never seen before
Oh there's love, there is love
Hum to 3rd verse
Oh the marraige of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name
There is love, there is love
It is quite a beautiful song and the original Stookey version is captivating and touching.
it's an intresting song list. i have to agree." You make me feel brand new" by the stylistics is my faves song of all times. i have a question. i know this one wedding song but i don't know who sung it. the song start with "You by my side that's all i see us" can you somehoe help me?
Hi Lexie --
I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question. Perhaps someone else here will be able to help you!
It's okey (^-^)i have another question. Do you think that all times melody song is more beautiful then morden melody?
Hi Ambiguous Wanderer, Do you know by any chance the wedding song the one i'm trying to found out who sing?
Hi Lexie --
Yes, I value the older melodies over the new melodies.
I would like to mention that Danny Boy is a fabulous song. I am glad to see it on someone else's list.
Thanks for sharing your great taste with us!
"Heaven's Door" as the best song? Not by a long shot. Although it is a good song, I don't even think it would have made my list.
What about songs like Cohen's much-covered "Hallelujah" or Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line"? I just think there are songs that have permeated the culture so much more than "Heaven."
"Heaven's Door" has been covered by other artists much more than those you mention.
Well I must admit David that is a fairly varied but a great top 10, however I belive that 'Imagine' or 'Jelous Guy' by the outstanding songwriter John Lennon must have a place on the list. 'Yesterday', a fantastic and melodic song may have been one of the Beatles finest but it neglects Lennon's talent as Paul McCartney did not only write it but also performed it. So, as a great Beatles but also a Lennon fan I belive that he deserves a place on that top 10. I also belive that the famous 'Stairway to Heaven' a worldwide success should also be credited for its perfection. Other debatable greatest songs of all time may be: Hotel California, Paint It Black, My Generation, Suspicious Minds.. o well the list goes on, this has to be a philosophical question or even a rhetorical question as there is no answer.
Excellent message, alex b! Welcome to the blog and thanks for sharing your insight!
