Yes! I'd put my money on the Native American ancestors enshrined in stone on a shirt to sell better.

They also sell a shirt showing Native Americans in full war regalia on horses and spitting up dust with the caption "Homeland Security since 1492" -- how divine!

I noticed in your Guest Author bio that the "Calcutta" link now takes us to a Wikipedia site that says the city is now spelled "Kolkata" -- what's up with that and what happened?

Thanks, Nicola! It's such a shameful history we share with the Native Americans. We brought them disease and alcoholism and heartache -- but some rubes would argue we made them rich with protected Federal lands called Reservations that they use to build casinos.

India observed mass killing in its history from time to time – those were mostly religious. The biggest riot occurred at the time of partition of the country in 1947. There was a massive population exchange that took place in both the country, it is said about 15 million people crossed the border to reach where it was supposed to be safe based on religious majority. None of the two newly formed governments was prepared to handle the frenzy and it is said that estimate of the number of death varied from two hundred thousand to a million because of violence and slaughter.

You are right about the name change of the city; “Calcutta” is the anglicized version of “Kolkata” which was actually originated from the name of the village “Kalikata”. “Calcutta” was a transformation of three villages by the British – “Kalikata, Sutanuti and Gobindapur". Though it is still globally known as “Calcutta” but the name has been officially changed to “Kolkata” in 2001.

[Never mind, I am in an extremely cantankerous mood as I am stuck here in Fargo in this thanksgiving holiday because of a ‘comedy of errors’….]

None of my family members were caught in this massacre that I am aware of but I know lot of my friends’ ancestors who had to cross the border, lost all their properties, had to start from scratch in a brand new place, some made it, some didn’t…all in the name of religion. Yes, it is sad. Yes, it is dangerous. Because, basically as human beings we are dumb.

I use “Kolkata” when I speak with a Kolkatan but I still refer my city as “Calcutta” because it’s easy to recognize for the rest of the world. I don’t mind you change the name; I would prefer to spell it as “Kolkata”.

Yes, my holiday plans got messed up because I didn’t have a definite plan…

I wanted to spend time with ‘A’, so refused ‘B’ and ‘C’ – but ‘A’ had their own plan…. ‘D’ joined to ‘B’ and ‘C’…so there was no room for me…and so on…

Well, will compensate it in Christmas for sure!
