Four Corners: Detroit Lakes

This article was written by Kathakali Chatterjee.

The first question I asked my roommate when I reached Fargo, ND was "where is the nearest lake?" "The closest one is 20 miles from here" - was a strong enough answer to dampen my mood on the very first day. At my previous school, the nearest lake was a two minute walk away. I decided to learn to live without a lake. In fact, I learnt to love it. I discovered the plus point of living on a flat land - you can actually see a lot more sky! You can actually watch a gorgeous sunset like this on your way back to Fargo from Detroit Lakes in west central Minnesota!

Detroit Lakes

On my quest for a lake I found this fabulous city called Detroit Lakes in west central Minnesota that has more than 400 lakes within 25 miles radius. One of which I just got back from as you can see below.

Detroit Lakes

I used to hate seagulls. I used to find them obnoxious. But not any more because I didn't even see one for last three months. Is this how we start paying attention to things we used to take it for granted?

Detroit Lakes

I grew up in one of the biggest cities in India in a plain land but the sea beach was only 50 miles away and the mountain was only a half-day journey. But, I didn't appreciate it until the date I was transferred to a different city. Then I started missing it!

Irony of life I believe! So, I think I better start loving Fargo more before I start missing it!

This is quite a fine article, Katha! I feel your sense of wonder and yearning. You also teach us how to appreciate what we have before we never see it again.

Thank you David!

This small trip got me refuelled for next couple of weeks!

You are smart to know you need a break from the routine in order to survive the routine, Katha.

It is making me nuts that I don't get notification of new comments on articles I did not write. Grr!

You are right!

Everyone has their own survival mechanism - mine is going for a 'get lost' trip - just like that!

I break the routine on my holidays just to taste something different!

I had no clue how beautiful the west central Minnesota is - its gorgeous!

Hi Katha,

There's something about being close to water that is beneficial to human beings.

I know I always feel more at peace when I've spent a little time near any body of water. Any huge body of water increases the effect.

I haven't had a chance to write about the neighborhood my wife and I have been looking at yet, but it will feature five ponds with water fountains.

It's very feng shui! :)

I am gald I am not the only person who has to be near water - I am lucky enough to live by the sea - and deliberately chose to do so.

Your lakes look beautiful.

Chris,

You are so right!

I don't know much abyout feng shui - but no matter how stressed I am - water...in any form - calms me down. It's almost magical!

Can't wait to see the five ponds with water fountains!

Nicola,

I am with you in this - water has almost a magical effect on us!

Midwestern nature is beautiful in its own way...I love it!
