December 2007 Archives

Sunday morning, December 30th, 2007 seemed like just about any other morning. It was to be the next to last day of the year. How could I have known that it would have been one of the saddest days for me? I suppose the first thing that should have alerted me that something was wrong was that I noticed that my father had called - rather early, actually. I didn't want to admit it to myself but the first though I had was that my grandmother had passed away. Then again, I had previously had this thought when either my father or mother had called in unusual circumstances and I was wrong then.

2007 is over, and I wonder, as you reflect back with me today, if you feel the last 12 months were more joyous or just bloodier than 2006?

Did Benazir Bhutto earn the death of a fool or the life a martyr?  Was she predestined to be cursed to an early grave from birth?

Who Will Weep for Tatiana?

Should we be surprised when a wild animal behaves like a wild animal and attacks when provoked? That is the question we need to ask when we consider the role zoos play in our lives on a moral and ethical level and we need to begin to wonder if raising wild animals in captivity is beneficial to the animal or if that process is only a money-making proposition where animals are used as entertainment. Tatiana, a Siberian tiger born in the Denver Zoo, was a beautiful being in 2003 when she was a cub.

I'm always amazed during the Christmas holiday season when crime and thuggery capture the headlines.  Last year the "hot thing" for the criminal element in society to do to celebrate Baby Jesus was to hunt down giant, inflatable, fabric Snowmen, Santa Clauses and Angels and slash them with knives to deflate their delight.

Has the spirit of the holidays been irrevocably corrupted?

I'm thrilled to announce the availability of my latest book -- Picture Yourself Learning Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard -- published by Thomson/Cengage Learning.

When Sex Was Fun

| 26 Comments | 1 TrackBack
There was a time in America when sex was fun, unrepressed, and a delight to be held. Behold now, if you dare, a delicious sliver in time from 1992 when sex was burning in the mind of Sandra Bernhard and clawing in the voice of Tom Jones as they perform together a wild rendition of "You're Unbelievable" live on her HBO show "Sandra After Dark" -- a satire on Hugh Hefner's original "Playboy After Dark" show from 1968:

Gossip as Entertainment

Sometimes when I go to the local market and pick up some food, I think of how fortunate I am that nobody cares that I am shopping. There is nobody around the corner waiting to take photographs of my shopping choices, writing down item after item -- is that a bag of quinoa or millet he has there?

Britney Spears -- the most unfortunate example of the stereotypical, rural, White-Trash-Baby-Mama -- has gone and done did the "Oops!" unthinkable again: She got her sister pregnant.

I was proud to be a resident of the State of New Jersey yesterday as Governor Corzine signed into law the abolishment of capital punishment.

Apekind Arising!

The Apekind are coming for us! The chimps, the Barbarys, the orangutans, the gibbons, the monkeys, the gorillas, those sneaky rhesus monkeys -- they're all smarter than we are, more moral, prettier, they're evolving faster than we are, they have more research money than we do, and they have access to better cigarettes!

We need to talk about exposed penises and open vaginas and what happens when the two get together to strike up some heat!

Is the purpose of prison to punish or to reform?

There are disturbing trends across the world that suggests prisons have become warehouses of punishment and despair that violate the basic terms of human dignity. Not a lot of good is coming into prisons or leaving prisons on parole.

Curious or Interesting?

In the optical illusion below the "A" square and the "B" square are the same color grey. Do you believe me? What makes you doubt the veracity of my claim? Do you find the illusion interesting? Are you curious to know more? I'll give you the proof of the argument at the end of this article.

We are living in dark times as radical religiosity the world over rises to punish ordinary, innocent, citizens in representative democracies where government-legislated values of faith are made to reform the law of the land in the name of a niche morality that presumes the best interest of the majority.

Yesterday, GOP candidate for president Mitt Romney -- some call him the Frankenstein "Herman Munster" cartoon candidate, and I will let you decide in the images below if they are monster twins or not -- made it clear if you do not have a religion, if you do not covet a faith, there is no place for you in his Mormon America.

Have you ever been with a group of friends, having a good time - talking, or whatever activity you may have been involved in - when everything was abruptly interrupted by the ringing of a mobile phone?

I answered the phone yesterday afternoon and heard the distraught voice of a friend of mine from Omaha. She kept repeating, over and over, as if her impromptu mantra would change history and peel back time: "This doesn't happen here. This happens there. Where you are. Not here. Not here. Not here."

I suppose it was inevitable: Don Imus of "Rutgers Nappy Headed-Hos" fame is back on radio as of Monday and one can only begin to wonder about the why of his return.

Many of us were shocked to learn working the graveyard shift will kill you.

The $400.00USD Amazon Kindle eReader sold out in less than five hours on its debut day November 20th. The next batch sold out even quicker -- I was lucky to get one delivered Friday -- and the third batch of Kindles will not be available for purchase until after December 25th.
