February 2008 Archives

Hot Rod designer Boyd Coddington died yesterday. He was 63. Internet rumors concerning his death said his colon burst, his liver was leaking or his kidneys failed.

After a fall in his home a couple of months ago, Boyd sustained several surgeries. Boyd made his bones designing cars. He made his fame as the star of his own TV show -- "American Hot Rod" on The Learning Channel.

Roger Clemens is in trouble. Did he knowingly take steroids and Human Growth Hormone and then lie about it during his testimony before congress? Is Clemens guilty of lying or just hubris? Which sin is worse?

The Grating Last Debate

Last night Barack and Hillary finished their 20th debate and, as usual, Barack was cool and Hillary tried to melt him with fiery accusations. Is anyone buying the humorless Clinton fire sale that Obama is unqualified to be president of the United States and Commander-in-Chief?

In the early lives of cities, having "eyes on the street" was the prime way neighborhood crime was policed and thwarted. The classic, semiotic, image of that early neighborhood watch was the old woman leaning out the window, delicately balancing her elbows in a feather pillow on the windowsill as she watched the activity on the street below.

Karl Popper is one of the SuperGeniuses of our time, and his brilliant book -- "Open Society and Its Enemies" -- is a must read for anyone hoping to understand our necessary and active place in the world.

Memeing a Copper Moon

We experienced a total lunar eclipse last night -- and this morning at 6:50am Eastern -- Janna took this image with her iPhone of a dying moon, still shining in its ghostly, copper, glory, as it falls into the horizon at the Journal Square PATH train station in Jersey City, New Jersey. The moon, if you can't see it, is dipping right below the traffic lights in the lower center of the image.

Deepak Chopra is one of those rare gifts to the rest of us: A true SuperGenius who inspires us with the inborn rhythms of storytelling while revealing the myth-making ability to heal humanity. Deepak's latest treading into immortality is his latest book -- "The Third Jesus" -- where he argues we need to celebrate a third "Cosmic Christ" as a part of our ongoing religious enlightenment:

The Clinton campaign accused Barack Obama of plagiarizing his speeches.

Kathakali Chatterjee wrote this article.

The recent race feud between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and Bill Clinton basically calling Obama a "boy", and the previous Senator Macaca mess -- all reminded me of the Indian cricketer being accused for racism as he called names while playing a test cricket series in Australia last month.

The Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh was accused of calling Andrew Symonds "a monkey" in the Sydney test cricket in Australia and was subsequently banned for next three matches. Here is Symonds in play:

It is our responsibility as cogent human beings to ban all handguns. We've felt the massacre at Virginia Tech. We know the horror of the gangland killings in Newark. We live with the regret of eight dead in Omaha. We're still freshly frozen from the  aftermath of last week's multiple Northern Illinois University assassinations:

I am currently in the keen Google GrandCentral beta.

If you live in the USA, and if you want an invitation to the beta, post a comment here and I'll send out invitations until I run out.

It is my delight and joy to let you know my new ASL book with Janna -- Picture Yourself Learning American Sign Language, Level 1 -- is now available for purchase from major online booksellers and in your local bookstore!

Celebrate Obamaday

Gordon Davidescu wrote this article.

Every year, hundreds of millions of cards are exchanged on February 14th, very frequently coming along with hundreds of billions of pounds of chocolate, stuffed animals, and other such presents. While these are all lovely ways of expressing sentimentalities, I have a suggestion for you that will be a gift that will keep on giving for the next four years. I'm not referring to a savings bond though that has its own benefits. Rather, I refer to the wonderful gift of donating to the Barack Obama campaign.
Obama slaughtered Hillary last night in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Barack didn't just beat her. He whupped her good. Is Obama rising? Or is he only cresting until Hillary can smash him again in Texas and Ohio?

Why are only the good-hearted left with broken hearts?

Pimping Out Chelsea Clinton

The Clintons cried wolf last week while basking in the indignity of their outrage and the perceived national indifference to the offense of their suffering! Why is Hillary Clinton so easily offended -- while the same sort of attacks wash off the back of Barack Obama?

A single Euro is currently worth 1.4728 U.S. Dollars -- is it any wonder that some Manhattan stores in New York are accepting Euros as payment for goods and services?

Is it Rape or a Rectal Exam?

If you bump your head and are taken to the emergency room for eight stitches -- would you expect a rectal exam to be part of the diagnosis process?

The Super Tuesday results are in and while some pundits are claiming a Hillary comeback against the rising Barack tide, I still find the trends moving Obama's way because he has the spirit to inspire others with his vision and poetry just like other political greats before him.

I Hate a Parade

The New York Football Giants are having a ticker-tape parade today to celebrate their Super Bowl XLII win. I hate a parade. Always have. Ever will.

The New York Giants -- who call the New Jersey Meadowlands their home field -- are the champions of Super Bowl XLII after beating the New England Patriots last night. There are three lessons to be learned in the David Giants going up against the "unbeatable" Goliath Patriots.
