Ethical Habit of Action

The Greeks had a way of constructing the character of a person on stage in a dramatic presentation:  Ethical Habit of Action.  You learn to understand a person based not on what they say, but rather on how they behave.  Don't believe what you're told.  Believe only what you see.  It is the bundled experience of the form -- the habit of action -- that defines us... and not the brittle persona many believe is the true and ethical morality of the person.

Attention spans are in a growing deficit.  That means we listen to each other less.  We read less.  We pay less attention in social learning circles like schools, business meetings and church sermons.

Nebraska Cancels William Ayers

In a strange move that I unfortunately recognize, but will never condone, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln played a coward's hand by going back on their word and canceling a speech by William Ayers.

I was pretty confident about my language skill when I came to the USA in 2004 from India, but it took a nose-dive within 20 minutes of my landing there. It was amazing to hear the responses for all the "thank yous" I offered. From the regular "no problem at all, and my pleasure etc." to a slightly unusual "no probs and you bet" to a stunningly musical "hmm...hmm" almost swept me off my feet.

Two of the most prolific and famous philosophers in the twentieth century were  Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) and Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951). Russell was Wittgenstein's teacher in Cambridge around 1911. Russell was the leading philosopher in England at that time, and one of the world's leading thinkers in philosophy of mathematics and logic.

Do you believe in ghosts and spirits?  Do you believe in haunted houses?  Do you believe children are able to see paranormal people and communicate with them?

This happened when I was about eight. One fine evening during a monsoon, after it had stopped raining, a bunch of us kids had stepped out clean and fresh to play. The ground was soggy and none of us really wanted to get wet again. We were getting bored, wondering what to do with an otherwise glorious evening. Then, one of us spotted a bird.

I am never at a loss for amazement when it comes to the stupidity of inane parents. It has been hot in New York City this week.  The streets are hot.  Sand on the beach is hot.  Black rubber playground mats are hot.  Those basic facts of living still do not appear to scare some parents into proactively protecting their children from running around barefoot and getting burned when that danger to life and limb is completely avoidable by invoking common sense and human decency.

Child abuse takes many ghostly forms and has a multiplicity of fathers.  I can still remember, decades later, the one time I was enticed by an older man and how the awful hauntings of that dungeon-like experience still threaten me today.

We must always teach our children universal ideas.  The temptation to "corridor" teach them -- instead of bending young minds open to other doorways for learning -- is a national failing of a teaching philosophy.
