Amazon Online Reader Review

I love my Kindle book reader but I also, finally, took the plunge to discover the Amazon Online Reader.  If you haven't used this online service from Amazon yet, you should "upgrade your eligible books" to include the Online Reader version -- especially if you're doing hard research -- because you can search the entire book and set a bookmark and you own the book for the rest of your life online:

Airtel Broadband Review

Dananjay Anandan wrote this article.

Today, I entrusted my internet connectivity to Airtel Broadband.  For the last five months or so I've been having trouble with my ISP. The connection is brought over a cable that is strung up alongside telephone posts and at least once every few weeks it gets cut and we lose connectivity for a few days.

Sometimes it was just half a day but a few times it took over four days for the problem to be rectified. Otherwise, the service has been great. The speed is consistent, the link is solid and the billing has been accurate mostly.  Though there was this one time when I had to persistently follow up with the customer service department to have them give me downtime credit for the days there was no service.

The Great Depression Depression

In theory, it was all supposed to go a certain way. I was supposed to have everything in my apartment packed and either shipped, sold, or eliminated in other ways. I was supposed to stay with a friend on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for a little while until I found my own place to live, and then I was going to live there. That is how it was supposed to go, but that is not at all how it went; life has had other plans for me thusfar.

As the internets condense, the volume and the viciousness of anonymous commenters has exploded.  Two years ago, most big blogs allowed anonymous commenting.  Today, those same blogs now require commenters to be registered in order to protect the integrity of the conversation.

Urban Semiotic requires all commenters be registered in order to join the discussion, and we use OpenID to meet that end.  We have a new Registration Page that explains, in detail, how to use OpenID to sign in to this blog to comment.

We used to allow direct registration with this blog, but a database issue forced us to use OpenID  instead -- so if you were once using the "Movable Type" option to login here to comment, we now need you to use an OpenID source.

The great thing about OpenID is you -- probably already have an account -- without knowing it!  We look forward to continuing our thoughtful dialogue with you, and if you have any questions, please use the Registration Page to get in touch.

Hose Hotrod's Crunk Petrol

In the name of unity, and in the spirit of reconciliation as the realization Sarah Palin will soon be the new Vice President of these United States, let it be known today we have re-named this blog from -- David W. Boles' Urban Semiotic -- to "Hose Hotrod's Crunk Petrol" thanks to the ingenious Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator. With Palin giving her children ridiculous names born for the mocking -- Trig, Willow, Piper, Track, Bristol -- it was inevitable the rest of the free world would follow her example.  As you can see below -- "Boles" -- in Palin-Speak translates into "Hose Hotrod..."

Yesterday, Pair Networks upgraded this Urban Semiotic blog -- and RelationShaping.com and WordPunk.com -- to the new Movable Type Pro 4.21 and yet, despite the hype from Six Apart, I am surprised to report Movable Type just as slow and ugly as it ever was.  Should it really take an hour and 21 minutes to republish 1,400 blog articles and 30,000 comments?

We know the web is filled with disingenuous sycophants and, if you have any sort of noble life on the Internets, you know all about Hate Mail.  If you're busy and successful, you hold your breath while writing email and, finally, you feel the twinge of not being able to tweak when you email Inbox is empty.

Do you suffer from Email Apnea?  Do you hold your breath while writing?

As I finish staring into my navel -- my gaze turns outward -- and I am, once again, reflected back in your eyes while my head explodes, in super-slow motion, all over our brand new Pair Networks QuickServe Dedicated Server!

UPDATE:  April 23, 2008.  This Urban Semiotic blog -- and all of David W. Boles' domains and blogs are now solely hosted by Pair Networks!  We will give you more information soon.  We are leaving this article online to protect the chain of understanding and we will update this space as necessary.

As you know, we recently moved this Urban Semiotic blog from WordPress to Movable Type 4.1 and we were hosted by the fine folks at Pair Networks. We are grateful for their previous love and support as we announce today yet another move of this blog - as well as RelationShaping.com and WordPunk.com - over to my pre-existing Media Temple 3.5 dv-Rage server and Movable Type Open Source 4.1.
